Nio Day 2021: What May Be In Store

I take a look ahead to Nio Day 2021, on 9th January, to discuss rumours about advancements they may be announcing. From improvements to the Nio EV Battery Swap stations to their potential 150 kWh battery.

The company recently announced the completion of an offering of 68,000,000 American depositary shares, at US$39.00 per ADS. They plan to use the net proceeds from the ADS offering for:

  • Research and development of new products and next generations of autonomous driving technologies.
  • Sales and service network expansion.
  • Market penetration.
  • General corporate purposes.

The annual Nio Day event has previously served as a platform for new product and service announcements. They are expected to announce:

  1. Their first sedan, believed to be the ET. It would be their fourth mass-produced model, after the EC6, ES8 and ES6. Speculation suggests it could have a coupe design like the Audi A7. It’s believed Nio could start mass manufacturing the model by the fourth quarter of 2021.
Speculation suggests the new model is likely to be driven by two electric motors at the front and rear axles with a combined output of 400kW, and carry a four-wheel drive system.
It may feature a range of over 450km and do 0-100km/h acceleration within 4.7 seconds.
  1. They are also expected to announce a 150 kWh battery pack during Nio Day 2021, which could increase the range of its EVs to over 560 Miles (900 kms).
The new pack is expected to be compatible with all existing Nio models.
Currently they have a 100kWh battery pack, launched on 6th November, that can provide a 615km range (NEDC). This increase in range, coupled with battery swap, is a phenomenal proposition.
  2. The company is expected to announce its second-gen battery swap stations. They will involve lower construction cost and contain more batteries than that of the existing one – believed to be over 400 per day.
In addition, NIO said it will speed up the deployment of battery swapping stations next year with nearly one new station added per day.
  3. It’s expected that there will be an announcement of an upgrade to their advanced driver assistance system platform. Speculation suggests it will likely feature lidar technology. (Light Detection and Ranging)

This uses laser pulses to build a 3D model of the environment around the car. Essentially, they help autonomous vehicles “see” other objects, like cars, pedestrians, and cyclists. This stems from their partnership with Intel Mobileye.
  4. During Nio Day 2021 they are due to discuss their expansion plans, likely to be into the EU. My expectation is that this will be Norway – owing to their being some jobs advertised on LinkedIn for Nio in Norway!
